Raymond Williams (1921-1988) was born in Pandy. After attending Abergavenny Grammar School he went on to Cambridge University, where his studies were interrupted by the Second World War. He saw active service as a tank commander, but following the War returned to Cambridge to finish his studies. Beginning his academic career in Adult Education with Oxford University, he went on to become a Professor of Drama at Cambridge University. He was major figure within the New Left and within wider British culture in the second half of the twentieth century. His writings on politics, culture and the mass media are some of the most influential in the English language.
